PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Students who successfully complete the 18-credit specialization certificate in Liturgical Music will:

  1. Establish a broad foundation of knowledge concerning the development of Catholic church music from the Middle Ages to the present;

  2. Demonstrate depth of knowledge in an area of liturgical music important to the student through the completion of elective coursework.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Introduction to Liturgy & Sacraments or Liturgical Theology (3 credits)

  • Any course in Sacramental/Liturgical Theology (12:xxx) category (3 credits)

  • Chant of the Roman Church or Sacred Music since Trent (3 credits)

  • Theology of Music or Liturgical Music Practicum (3 credits)

  • Six additional credits in electives in sacred music or liturgy

Electives in liturgy might include Sacramental Theology, Liturgical Theology, and Liturgical Year. Elective courses in music might include Music and Culture, Vernacular Musical Traditions of the United States, and Women in Sacred Music.

Note: Students are required to demonstrate basic proficiency in musical history, note-reading, and keyboard skills by the end of the program. Those who have not previously taken coursework in music history or theory, based on their transcripts, may take a placement test to pass this requirement. Those who need it must complete Fundamentals of Music as a prerequisite.
